Interstitial cystitis is a syndrome which is characterized by feeling the need to urinate immediately. It is related with the chronic urinary urgency and also the frequency with suprapubic discomfort is generally relieved by urinating. Cystitis and urinary tract infection are both caused by an inflammation of the lining of the bladder and the urinary tract. This is usually the result of a bacterial infection spread from the anus either through poor hygiene or through sexual intercourse.

Cystitis

Both men and women can suffer from cystitis, but women are usually more susceptible due to their shorter urinary tract. Bacteria can reach the bladder more quickly. Symptoms include painful urination, cloudy urine, with fever and backache in severe cases.

It can also be caused by vaginal infections such as thrush, sexually transmitted diseases, and vaginal deodorants. Bruising (as a result of sexual intercourse or childbirth) can also trigger the condition.
